“High Fashion Wedding Photography” Styled Shoot with Brett Florens

This past fall we had the pleasure of working with South African photographer Brett Florens, and the online education company creativeLIVE. Brett taught a 3-day creativeLIVE course for photographers wanting to break into high-end, high-fashion styled wedding photography. Sugarcomb was brought in to create his set designs, including a bridal suite and ceremony, which were used as part of the live classroom experience.

The vision was to create sets that looked feminine, elegant, luxurious, and dramatic. To achieve this, we started with a color palette of blush pink, coral, gold, and crisp white. We incorporated elements with different textures – organza, crystals, sequins, velvet, and metallics – to add visual richness and a feeling of modern luxury. It all came together with oversized orchid-filled arrangements and lush garden rose bouquets from July Floral Design.

We were privileged to collaborate with a talented team of producers, production assistants, prop managers, and wedding professionals who helped bring our vision to life in the studio. Here are some of our favorite images that Brett shot during the live class.

Sugarcomb Wedding | Tara & Nathan

You may recognize Tara, Sugarcomb’s fabulous Design & Coordination Lead. She tied the knot with Nathan at The Old Chaser Farm last August, and it was spectacular. The two have known each other since childhood; Tara just showed me a photo the other day of Nathan’s father holding her as a baby, what rare and amazing roots these two’s lives have together. You could say that Tara’s instinctual love of color and paper (and Nathan!) had just about everything to do with this  event, from the delicate corals, mints and golds, to her self-designed letterpressed papers and the tissue fringe, it was all perfection. Enjoy looking through this airy and bright farm wedding. I can say it’s one of the hardest I’ve ever had to edit down for the blog, the images that Julie Harmsen captured were so gorgeous that there was simply too much good stuff to choose from. Sugarcomb is so lucky to have such an amazing bride and planner on our team. Congratulations, Tara and Nathan!

Sugarcomb Wedding | Gary & Gilbert

gary-gilbert-wedding-026

Gary and Gilbert were married in downtown Seattle at The Sorrento this past December. These handsome grooms had us at hello with stunning dreams for their wedding day. One of the first things they said to us when we started working together was that they wanted their guests to be completely “Wowed!” by their wedding. They wanted the event to feel elegant and sophisticated, but also be memorable and personal. And above all else, one big (dance) party! We figured out pretty early on that designing their wedding was going to be just plain fun.

As we do with every couple, we asked about their story and what made them excited about their wedding day. It could not have been a sweeter story. Gary met Gilbert on a blind date shortly after they had each moved to Seattle, Gary from Idaho and Gilbert from Utah. Neither of them was quite sure how well their first date had gone, but 15 years later that date would become their wedding day. That’s right, they got married on the 15th anniversary of their first date. Total heartmelt.

During the design process we learned about their love for traveling and used this as a springboard for ideas. They already had a color palette of classic black and white, to which we added accents of glittery gold, warm greys and amber. We looked to Paris, their favorite international city, for inspiration on how to tie it all together. The twinkle and sparkle of candlelight, the metallic shine of gold and sequin linen gave a nod to the name “City of Lights”. The hand painted window signs often seen in Parisian storefronts were represented by the calligraphic style of the custom table numbers, signs and name cards. The architectural details of building facades and interiors were matched in the patterned table linens. And to top it all off, guests signed vintage Paris postcards as their guestbook.

Everything about that evening turned out beautifully, but nothing could compare to the joy and love shared by the guests and happy couple. It was definitely amazing and we were the ones “Wowed!” by Gary and Gilbert’s open hearts and dance moves.

Sugarcomb Wedding | Olita & Steve

Olita & Steve’s wedding made it into our galleries and onto Style Me Pretty quite a while back, but never officially hit our blog…so here we go! This gorgeous couple was the sweetest and they filled their wedding with lots of yellow pops, grey accents and fun DIY projects including homemade limoncello favors.

A Sugarcomb Tablescape “Downtown Downhome Charm”

With the whirlwind that was 2013, we’re a bit behind on sharing! So, here we go with the first of many posts that we’re excited to blog about.

First off is this spread from Seattle Met Bride & Groom Magazine’s Summer/Fall 2013 issue. It was shot at the beautiful modern and rustic Cast Iron Studios in Bellevue. The inspiration was rough-hewn white-on-white industrial. Our design included unique florals that looked like they’d been poured into our antique metal basket by July Floral Design. Also included was stunning letterpress paper goods by Two Thousand Pounds of Letterpress, a wonderful new printer in Fremont. A La Modo cake slice boxes were used as favors, tied with antique raw silk ribbons and adorned with customized flatware. The vintage metal chairs and candlesticks were from Scout. The hand-painted pillows, napkins and table runner were by Honey Brush. And the cakes and delicious food items were all provided by Cast Iron Studios.

Blueberry Harvest Wedding Inspiration with Jasmine Star

We were excited to have our latest styled shoot featured on Style Me Pretty and The Jasmine Star Photography Blog today! Below are images of our designs, shot by JD and Jasmine Star. The vision was to create a worldly palette with mixed patterns and textures; it translates well as a summer or fall palette.

This shoot was also the premier of Sugarcomb’s new Paper Goods services! We are in the process of launching our full collection…find more details here!

“Foundation of Love.” A Styled Shoot with Jasmine Star

creativeLIVE-creativeLIVE-0002

This spring, I had the tremendous privilege to begin working with Jasmine Star and CreativeLIVE on an exciting styled shoot project. Jasmine came to Seattle in April to teach a 3-day CreativeLIVE course to photographers on how to shoot an editorial wedding, Sugarcomb was brought in to create her live set design, which was used as part of the classroom experience.

We started with the story of who our bride and groom were – a savvy fashion blogger and a detailed architect, and took the design from there. I designed a concept based on water-washed feminine elements and structural images that came together to create a bright, angular and floral heavy wedding reception that was a balanced blend of the bride and groom. It took place in an empty industrial photography studio where we collaborated with a fabulous team of builders and wedding pros to put our vision together. Here are is a sampling of the images that Jasmine shot live during the class…

Behind the Scenes | Punch Bowl Flower Arrangement

I’m still a little obsessed with the flower our arrangement from the ABC/ISES event last week.  (See yesterday’s blog post for more info.)  It was put together by the talented Meghan Stoller of MUM Floral Design.  I’m so excited to see more of her work at the weddings we are working on together this Summer!  We started out with our design, a trip to the floral wholesaler and a giant silver punch bowl.  The flowers used were gorgeous carmel garden roses, white roses, ranunculus and hydrangea.  Meghan brought andromeda that was from her own garden.  Here are the photos of the arrangement coming together…enjoy!
See the prior post for photos of the final product.
